Understanding polyphony and multitimbrality helps you choose a synthesizer that matches how you actually play. Polyphony is simply the maximum number of notes a synth can sound at the same time. Each note uses one “voice.” Once you run out of voices, the instrument starts stealing notes from earlier ones, often cutting them off abruptly.

Multitimbrality, on the other hand, tells you how many completely different sounds the synth can produce simultaneously. A multitimbral instrument can layer a piano on top of strings while a bass line plays on a third sound, all at once. These two concepts work together but answer different questions: how many notes, and how many distinct timbres.

What Polyphony Feels Like in Practice

Play a simple chord and most synths handle it easily. Add a sustained pad underneath and the voice count climbs fast. A rich pad often uses eight voices per note because of unison detuning or multiple oscillators. Hold that pad with your left hand while your right plays a melody and you may suddenly hear earlier notes disappear. That sudden cut-off is note stealing. It can sound musical in arpeggiated parts but jarring in slow, atmospheric music.

Multitimbrality and Performance Setups

Multitimbral synths shine when you want to split the keyboard or layer sounds without external gear. A four-part multitimbral instrument might let the lower octave play a warm bass, the middle range a bright electric piano, and the upper octaves a shimmering pad. The same machine can also receive separate MIDI channels from a sequencer, turning one box into an entire backing track.

Buyers can test both concepts right in the store. First, hold a chord with both hands, then add a sustain pedal while playing fast notes on top. Listen for any earlier notes dropping out. Next, engage any built-in arpeggiator or sequencer and gradually increase the number of simultaneous parts. Try layering a pad, a lead, and a percussion loop at the same time. If the sound thins or previous layers vanish, you have reached the voice or timbre limit.
