CV, Gate and MIDI: How Synths Talk to Each Other

In the world of synthesizers, communication between instruments is everything. Whether you’re patching a modular rig, syncing a drum machine to a keyboard, or sequencing hardware from a computer, three main languages dominate: CV and gate, MIDI, and its modern sibling USB MIDI. Understanding what each carries—and what it leaves behind—helps you avoid frustrating mismatches and build systems that actually play together.

Analog synthesizers from the 1970s onward often rely on control voltage (CV) for pitch and gate signals for timing. A rising gate voltage tells an envelope to fire; a steady CV tells an oscillator what note to play. The most common standard is 1 volt per octave, so moving up one octave raises the voltage by exactly 1 V. This approach is fast and immediate but limited: CV usually carries only one piece of information at a time, and every parameter needs its own cable.

How Gate and CV Actually Work

Gate signals are simple on/off triggers, typically jumping from 0 V to +5 V or +10 V when a key is pressed. Some systems use short trigger pulses instead of sustained gates, but the idea is the same: start the envelope or advance the sequencer. Pitch CV follows the volts-per-octave rule in most modern gear, so middle C might sit at 0 V, the C an octave higher at +1 V, and so on. This leaves no room for velocity, aftertouch, or modulation unless you add extra CV cables. That’s why a fully patched modular voice can quickly turn into a spaghetti of patch cords.

MIDI: The Universal Digital Language

MIDI transmits rich event data over a single cable. Note-on and note-off messages carry pitch, velocity, and channel information. Control-change (CC) messages adjust parameters such as filter cutoff or vibrato depth. MIDI clock keeps sequencers, arpeggiators, and drum machines in tight tempo sync, sending 24 pulses per quarter note. Unlike CV, MIDI can describe many simultaneous notes and gestures, but it is not continuous; data arrives in discrete packets that can introduce tiny delays in dense setups.

USB MIDI does the same job without traditional 5-pin DIN connectors. It turns your computer into a central hub, letting software send note data, clock, and automation directly to compatible instruments. The limitation is obvious: USB MIDI still needs a MIDI-to-CV converter or a USB-equipped voice module to talk to pure analog gear. Without that bridge, your laptop cannot control an oscillator’s pitch or trigger an envelope directly.

When Gear Only Speaks Half the Language

You’ll often see listings that say “MIDI in only” or “CV/gate out.” These half-compatible instruments can receive timing or note data but cannot send it back, or they output analog control signals without understanding MIDI. This is common in older drum machines that accept MIDI clock yet have no note input, or in certain analog sequencers that spit out CV but ignore incoming digital messages. Knowing these limits prevents dead ends when building a live rig or studio chain.

Modular systems remain mostly analog at heart, so they need dedicated MIDI-to-CV interfaces or USB-equipped modules to accept data from computers or MIDI controllers. These converters translate note numbers into precise voltages, clock into gate pulses, and selected CCs into modulation CV. The translation is never perfect—some nuance always gets lost—but it lets digital brains drive analog hearts with surprising musicality.

Choosing the right language depends on your instruments and goals. A small analog setup might thrive on CV and gate alone for immediacy and zero latency. Adding MIDI opens polyphony, sequencing, and computer integration. USB MIDI simplifies cabling once you’re in the box. The best rigs often speak all three, using each where it shines and converters where they must meet.
