Studio Monitor Placement in Small Rooms
In a small untreated room, studio monitor placement becomes the single most effective tool for improving accuracy before you touch any acoustic treatment or software. The goal is simple: create the most neutral listening window possible so that what you hear translates reliably to headphones, cars, and living-room speakers. Get the speakers and your head in the right spots and many familiar problems—boomy bass, harsh treble, smeared imaging—shrink dramatically.
The classic equilateral triangle remains the foundation. Position the two monitors so the distance between them equals the distance from each monitor to your listening position, forming an equilateral triangle. In rooms shorter than 3.5 m this often means pulling the desk away from the rear wall and angling the monitors inward. Tweeters should sit at ear height when you are seated in your normal mixing posture; most small monitors need to be raised 10–20 cm off the desk surface to achieve this.

Distance from walls and the corner trap
Every boundary reflects sound. Place monitors closer than 30 cm to a rear wall and you reinforce low frequencies, creating a bloated bottom end that masks detail. Moving them out to 50–80 cm usually yields a tighter low end. Corners are even worse: they collect bass energy from three surfaces at once, exaggerating the lowest frequencies by a clearly audible margin. If your only option is near a corner, pull the monitors at least 60 cm away from both side and rear walls and expect to address the remaining buildup later with room correction software.
Desk reflections and speaker isolation
The surface directly beneath the monitors creates early reflections that blur the stereo image and add comb-filtering in the midrange. Simple isolation pads or dense foam risers break this acoustic short-circuit. They also decouple the monitors from the desk, preventing the wooden surface from acting as an extra resonant panel. Angle the monitors so their axes cross just behind your head rather than directly at your ears; this keeps the tweeters aimed at the listening spot while reducing direct desk bounce.
A quick reality check uses music you know intimately. Play a familiar track, then slowly walk around the room while listening. You will hear the bass thicken dramatically in corners and near walls, the midrange thin out in certain spots, and the imaging collapse when you step too far off-axis. Mark the position where the balance sounds most even and natural—that is your starting listening spot. Fine-tune the monitors from there.
Once the physical placement is dialled in, room correction software can tackle remaining modal issues, but it works far better on a well-positioned system than on one fighting fundamental geometry problems.

The room will still need treatment eventually, but good placement gives you a fighting chance from day one.
