The three classic pedals—sustain, sostenuto, and soft—each open distinct doors for expression, and learning their digital implementations helps you move beyond simple on-or-off switching into something closer to the nuanced control of a grand piano.

The sustain pedal, also called the damper pedal, is the one players reach for most often. When you press it, the samples continue ringing after you release the keys, simulating the lifting of dampers inside an acoustic piano. Many entry-level digital pianos use simple switch-type sensors that register only fully down or fully up.

Higher-quality instruments employ continuous sensors that measure how far the pedal is depressed, allowing half-pedaling. This technique lets you catch only part of the resonance—exactly as a pianist does on a real instrument to create a lighter, more transparent wash of sound. Half-pedaling matters because it gives you dynamic control over decay and clarity, turning the pedal from a blunt tool into an expressive brush.

How the Sostenuto Pedal Works on Digital Pianos

The sostenuto pedal is the middle one on a traditional grand and the least understood. Unlike the sustain pedal that catches every note you play while it is held down, sostenuto only sustains the notes that are already sounding at the exact moment you press the pedal. Any keys struck afterward remain unaffected.

On digital pianos this function is often omitted on single-pedal units or requires a dedicated triple-pedal bar. The Soft Pedal and Digital Simulation

When purchasing pedals separately, check connector type (normally 6.35 mm TRS or TRRS jacks) and polarity; mismatched plugs can cause the pedal to work backwards. Some instruments also allow you to assign functions to any pedal via a setup menu, which is useful if you prefer a different order or want to duplicate the sustain pedal on two inputs for toe-and-heel techniques.

Clean pedaling technique remains the same whether the piano is acoustic or digital. Keep your heel on the floor, move from the ankle, and listen critically for smudged transitions.
